Dust mites are gross and they are living in your house right now.
You may have even heard of them before, but do you really know what a dust mite is? Or how they can affect your life? If not, you’ve come to the right place. We’re about to break it down for you and give you the lowdown on all things related to dust mites.
Dust mites are microscopic bugs which are actually related to ticks and spiders with one important difference: they like to live in household dust. Dust mites love to feast on the skin cells your family sheds (and which is what makes up a lot of the dust in a home). This means that they like to hang out wherever dust is: in bedding, in your couch cushions, and in the dust tumbleweeds lurking on your floors and under furniture.
These little jerks also are the culprit behind many peoples’ allergies. Lots of people live with dust mite allergies and if severe enough, these can even contribute to problems with asthma. Thankfully, regular dusting, vacuuming, and cleaning is sufficient to remove them from most surfaces and keep the number of resident dust mites in your home small.
But because dust mites also prefer dark, somewhat moist places, ductwork is one of their favorite hangouts. And ductwork isn’t something that most people clean every day or week the way many of us clean the rest of our home. This can lead to your ductwork becoming a breeding ground for dust mites and also helping to distribute them around your home via the air that circulates through the system and exits the vents into every room of your house.
The solution? Get your ductwork cleaned regularly.
You don’t need to do it every week, every month, or even every year. We recommend having your ductwork cleaned every 3-5 years at a minimum and if you or someone in your home suffers from allergies or asthma, you could increase that to every 2-3 years. This will help to eliminate large sources of dust and debris for them to munch on in your ducts, which will ultimately help to keep their numbers down throughout your house.
